Why I Started Little Lox Co — For My Baby Girl and Our Jewish Roots

Updated: Aug 3

Hi! I’m Chava, founder of Little Lox Co. I started this blog as a little hub for tips, freebies, checklists, inspo, art projects, and all the helpful bits and pieces we’ve picked up while raising our own little one. Every parent does things a little differently (and that’s totally okay!), but it’s always nice to have something to lean on — because raising kids is beautiful, messy, and a lot. And if there’s one thing Jewish life has taught me, it’s that community makes everything better.

So… how did all of this start?

It really began when I became a mom back in 2023. In those early, sleep deprived newborn days, running on love, coffee, and a very questionable amount of sleep, I found myself thinking a lot about how I would keep the spark of Judaism alive in my daughter’s life. I was raised Modern Orthodox, surrounded by a deep love for Judaism. My dad a"h dedicated his life to bringing Jews of all backgrounds together. He passed away when I was a teenager, and though I tried to hold onto the spark he lit in me, it slowly grew dim over the years.… until my daughter was born.

I found myself wanting her to feel the same joy and connection I did growing up, and I wanted a way that would help me reconnect as well. It was actually right around Chanukah that I realized that there weren't many options for Jewish clothing other than for Chanukah, which is ridiculous because in my opinion it's like number 3 on my top holidays (Sukkot is number one, and I will die on that hill). That’s when the idea hit.

As a graphic designer, illustrator, and photographer, I decided to create what I couldn’t find. During my daughter's naptimes where I very much should have been napping as well, I sketched, planned, learned how to launch a business, and brought Little Lox Co to life. It wasn’t always glamorous (I definitely should’ve slept more), but it was full of heart.

Hand-painted watercolor Shabbat pattern elements that were then scanned, cleaned up through photoshop, and then turned into the Shabbat pattern.

I wore a lot of hats in the beginning — taking the photos, building the website, designing everything from scratch (some digitally, some the old-fashioned way with watercolor and pencil), and figuring out how to actually get it all out into the world. I just kept going, learning as I went, with a handful of panic attacks and the endless encouragement of my husband, family, and friends, and plenty of cuddly supervision from my daughter and our two cats, Sam and Judah Meowcabi. (They take their roles very seriously.)

Since launching, this little brand has grown into something I never expected. It has become a way to share Jewish connection through creativity and to meet other parents who want to pass something meaningful on to their kids as well. I found myself reconnecting to a community I thought I had lost, only to realize that connection was always there, just waiting to be rediscovered.

This blog is a little space where I can share what has helped us along the way — helpful tips, meaningful moments, a bit of encouragement, and the occasional behind-the-scenes peek at life with Little Lox Co.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I’m really glad you’re here.

With love,

Chava
